2.F Mathematics

2.F.02
Children are provided varied opportunities and materials to build understanding of numbers, number names, and their relationship to object quantities and to symbols.

Children play counting games, matching the number of bugs with the number on the dice, or subtracting frogs from the log as they get added to the pond.

Children have many opportunities to play active games like hopscotch. They write numbers, count as they jump, guess how far they will land, etc.
2.F.03
Children are provided varied opportunities and materials to categorize by one or two attributes such as shape, size, and color.

Children have many opportunities to sort out objects according to various attributes.  We have sorting toys in bins that are always available for the children to use.  Also, we will sort actual objects such as buttons or mittens/gloves.  In this example, they are sorting fruits and vegetables during our food investigation.

Children observing and sorting seashells.

2.F.05
Children are provided varied opportunities and materials that help them understand the concept of measurement by using
a. standard and
b. non-standard units of measurement.

Every week, when cooking, children have many opportunities to measure ingredients by cups, tablespoons, and other units of measurements.

During our weather investigation, children graphed the day’s weather and compared the quantities of different kinds of weather within the month.

During our winter investigation, we graphed who wore gloves or mittens.  The children counted the number and compared the quantities.

2.F.06 Children are provided varied opportunities and materials to understand basic concepts of geometry by, for example, naming and recognizing two- and three-dimensional shapes and recognizing how figures are composed of different shapes.
With our magnet shape blocks, the children enjoy putting together different shapes to construct figures and in the process, discover how two half circles make one, and other related geometric concepts such as symmetry.

Children also use magnetic shape tiles to build 3D structures such as houses, castles, garages.

2.F.07
Children are provided varied opportunities to build an understanding of time in the context of their lives, schedules, and routines.
During group time every morning, children go over the calendar, identifying the year, month, date and day. The visual helps them understand the passage of time as they count the days to the Halloween party or discuss the events from the weekend before last.

Class schedules are posted for the children to understand what routines occur at a specific time.

2.F.08
Children are provided varied opportunities and materials that help them recognize and name repeating patterns.
Children enjoy using pattern blocks to follow patterns and create patterns of their own.

When doing the calendar every morning, children follow the pattern of the month to fill in each day.
